Commander’s Update June 2019
Posted: Jun 16, 2019
It’s official. This past month the Combat Infantrymen’s Association had its name approved as a Trademark. Any individual or corporation who uses the name of our association without our permission will be subject to disciplinary action in the Courts including financial penalties. Our name is now protected.
During the past 9 months, our association has been involved in issues that will lay the groundwork for. our future growth and accomplishments. Below are activities that you should be aware of.
Scholarship Program: Our Scholarship program was re-activated and the 1st place scholarship will be announced at the convention. The winning essay will be read at the convention and placed in our newsletter and website. Many of you had advised me to re-establish this program. Done!
Convention Book Our Convention Book is nearly completed. One will be included in every convention packet. Corporate ad contributors will receive a copy of the book. Additional copies of the book will be available for $5 to cover the cost of printing.
Orange County, California: The group recently participated in the Vietnamese dinner honoring descendants of Vietnamese immigrants who presented themselves in their American military uniform. Among the guests was new Orange County CIB member Tom Evans – president and CEO of the US Rangers Association.
Sacramento, California: Plans are being made to travel to Sacramento in July and assist in the organization of a new post.
San Antonio, Texas: This group is being re-organized under the leadership of Tony Martinez and Rodney Walker. Their goal is to have their first meeting in July.
Director – Legislative Affairs: Support member Jennifer Knowles has been appointed as Director. Her job will be to keep us informed of pending legislation regarding Veterans and the V.A., especially issues related to Combat Veterans. Additionally, she will be doing research on topics that your National Commander will be presenting before a Joint Session of Congress within the next year.
Newsletter Distribution: I am committed to annually mailing out at least one Blue Badge Newsletter to our members. Nearly half of our members don’t own a computer. Let’s keep ALL of our membership informed.
Flash Drives: Each Commander will receive a flash drive that contains the following information: Meeting signup sheet, Sample Agenda, Sample Minutes, Sample finance report, Opening/Closing prayer, Roster of current and potential members for printing Avery labels.
Membership Forum: A round table discussion is planned to inform our leadership on different strategies for “recruiting and keeping” members. Those techniques will be on a Flash Drive. National’s goal is “how can we help you”?
Elected officials have been requested to provide a welcoming letter for the convention book. Some of those contacted have also requested an opportunity to give welcoming presentations.
Larry Eckard is retiring as convention chairman after the August 2019 convention. He has put together a great convention on behalf of our members attending the convention. Great job Larry!
My primary goal for the 2019 convention is to weaponize our Commanders by providing them with the tools necessary to improve their commands when they return home.
Best Personal Regards.
Alfred C. Serrato National Commander
